![I’ve been meaning to post this for a while and a was reminded to do so after posting a similar story on The Mary Sue. I got an email a few months ago that said, “I have a picture of the most adorable little girl sitting on a big chair holding a bunny rabbit. My daughter [redacted] was in [the] hospital in New York in 1985. We met a little girl named Jill and she fell in love with [redacted’s] bunny rabbit that wiggled it’s nose. When we came home we mailed a rabbit to Jill. I need to know if this little girl is you.”
It was.
I couldn’t believe my eyes. This pink bunny rabbit was one of my FAVORITE toys growing up but I never knew its origin. As soon as I read the message I cried because I realized I met this woman and her daughter while I was in the hospital being diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) when I was 2 & 1/2. (So you can see why I wouldn’t remember.) My mother had sent her the photo after we received the package and had written my name on the back. A quick google search allowed her to find my blog. She wrote, “as soon as I saw your picture I knew it was you.”
I knew immediately we had to dig up the bunny (which also made a guest appearance in a store window in 1987’s Adventures in Babysitting) and recreate the shot. The best part was, my parents still owned the rocking chair I was sitting in as well.

My photographer brother, Adam Pantozzi (he’s on tumblr now!), took a lovely photo of me with his film camera while we were in Italy. This is pretty much what I did the whole time.
So this happened.
Tonight I attended the opening of the Game of Thrones exhibit in NYC simply planning to take pictures of awesome costumes and props. There was fun themed food and drink to be had and it was set to be a great night.
I had missed sitting on the Iron Throne twice already and was disappointed to find out the one at the exhibit was up a few stairs. And then I met Maisie Williams (Arya) and Sophie Turner (Sansa). We were having a casual conversation when I mentioned the stairs and they made it their mission to get me on the Iron Throne. With a little help from HBO and a wonderful security guard, I was carried up the steps and placed gently on the famous seat. The girls grabbed Natalie Dormer (Margaery) and John Bradley (Sam), who were also in attendance, to join us for this completely EPIC photo.
It was completely unexpected and the girls went out of their way to make one of my dreams come true. I could not thank them enough and everyone was so nice! I felt like a true Khaleesi.
I’m basically soaring on a dragon right now.

While searching Flickr for photos from C2E2 I found out there was another Ice Queen there that weekend!
The top image (cosplayer unknown Rena Throndson) was taken by the always awesome DJTAAAAM on Flickr. And the one of me (Jill Pantozzi) below is by the wonderful Pat Loika who I finally got to meet in person this past weekend!
This was such a fun costume to do (and really comfortable) and I’m glad I did it on kid’s day because I had so many adorable Adventure Time fans wanting to take pictures with me (the little girl behind me came up just after this was taken).
Gutters on Female Comic Creators
I woke up this morning to find many messages from readers telling me to check out the Gutters. Today’s comic, written by the always amazing Jill Pantozzi with art by Amy Mebberson, addresses an issue pretty near to my heart. And, of course, the comments have the usual cast of idiots.
So…I wrote this.
I just want to thank everyone for the amazing outpouring of love for the strip. When I was writing it, I was worried it was far too cheesy for what I was trying to go for but it turns out it was just right.
First off, my utmost gratitude to Amy Mebberson for making my vision become a reality. I gave Amy a LOT to work with and she made my dreams come true.
Thanks to Ryan, Jeff, and Rich of the Gutters crew who got this whole thing happening in the first place.
Thanks to my pals Chris, Susana, and Alan who gave me input on the script while I was stressing over it. And thanks to DC Women Kicking Ass for tumblring it. :)
A few things regarding some of the comments I’m seeing:
- No, the Jill in the strip is not meant to be me but another curly-haired redhead, Jill Thompson (Scary Godmother, Beasts of Burden, Sandman). I swore we had a picture together, and I wanted to post it, but I can’t find it.
- Some are worried about the fans being fought off in one panel - these are meant to be seriously crazed fans, the kind that actually scare creators. They’re few and far between but they exist. This was not a dig at the usual, enthusiastic fans, which these ladies love.
- Yes, the dialogue for Kelly/Amanda got accidentally swapped in that panel.
- I’ve seen a few folks say they might start reading Gutters again because of this. First of all, wow, and thank you. But second, I feel people sometimes forget endeavors like this are a group effort. It’s like when someone comments that “The Mary Sue” doesn’t like something or other, as if we’re a hive mind. We have three staff writers and a group of lovely contributors who have differing opinions. Gutters is kind of the same thing. So I guess my point is, don’t rule it out because of one strip.
- Without knowing it, Amy wound up making the girl in the last panel look JUST like my niece.
- Some people said the strip made them tear up or all-out cry. Thanks. Now you’ve made me cry. :)
Lastly, thank you to Gail Simone, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Louise Simonson, Amanda Conner, and Jill Thompson - true powerhouses of the comic industry who inspire me daily. I could not think of a better superhero team to kick ass.
